The In's and Out's of Oisin's Guitar Lessons
Ok so I'm going to start by making it very clear that I am not a trained musician in any way shape or form. I started playing the guitar when i was fifteen, i taught myself by getting tabs and chords on the internet and trying to figure them out. Which in my opinion worked well because I got to play what i wanted to play.
I learned by playing along with the CD's, listening to the song and looking at the tabs which i think got me used to knowing stuff like strumming patterns which i dont have any faith in. The problem with strumming patterns is your trying to think in two places at once and you get all stiff. Just let you right hand (or left if your a lefty) look after itself, you want it to flow smoothly across the strings, get the chords right first and play it with the song millions of times (this should be ok cause you picked the song) and your right hand will catch up. You'll begin to find that you listen to the beginning of a new song and your brain just knows how to strum it right.
Some people will tell you to memorise an entire chord book before you start, i dont think theres any point your only going to play the chords in the songs you like. Again I'm not a trained teacher so feel free to do that if you want. I would advise you just learn chords as you need them, most songs have the same chords in different arrangements anyway.
All the music found on this site is in the form that I have learned it and as such could be wrong but I think it sounds right. There are many different ways to play any piece of music on the guitar, don't be scared to throw a slide or a hammer on in somewhere you think its needed. Music is about creativity not how well you can mimic to guy who done it first.
I intend to layout chord songs in the normal manner i.e. lyrics with the chords above them and pictures of the chords at the top of the page. For more complicated tab arrangements i intend to do short videos showing the song played in slowly and at normal speed. Beneath these videos will be the tabs thus allowing you to watch the video while looking at the tab which is something I would consider beneficial.
